The action will once again pump up at this quiet town of Sturgis at the break of dawn on Aug 4, 2008 as the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally launches and fires up.

This much awaited annual rally lasting for 6 days until the 10 th of August 2008 is attended by a staggering amount of as much as 600,000 people. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is not only one heck of an exciting event but it also happens to be one of the oldest motorcycle rallies in the United States that is still alive and kicking up to this date.

What used to be known as the “The Black Hills Classic” was officially started on August 14, 1938 by the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club whose founding father was Clarence “Pappy” Hoel. This huge event has its humble beginnings involving merely 9 motorcycles and a few people as spectators.

It has been held annually except for the year 1942 when gas rationing occurred because of World War II. It began as a one day format gradually expanding until it became the seven day format in 1975 which is practiced up to today. What used to be a very simple event, this rally has grown to become the very popular Sturgis Motorcycle Rally as it is known today.

There are many events at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally that will definitely keep your adrenaline running. There are the motorcycle hill climbs, motorcycle drag racing on an eighth mile strip, and custom motorcycle shows. To keep the party roaring alive, live music throughout the event will be played and vendors to satiate your every possible biker and personal need are roaming around.

Of course, even though you can find every bit of excitement at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, it wouldn’t hurt to stop by the many different attractions that this place has to offer. Take a tour on the history of Sturgis by going to Historic Deadwood, Crazy Horse Memorial or the Devils Tower National Monument . Enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Homestake Gold Mine, Mount Rushmore or the Badlands National Park.

Before you go pack up your bags and your motorcycle jackets and gear, there are certain rules you have to know regarding this race such as use of helmet, mirrors, turn signals and eye protection are required. Daylight headlights modulating headlight are permitted and a passenger seat and passenger footrests are required if carrying a passenger. These are only few of the many motorcycling rules you have to know for this rally.
