7 Things to Do in Grenada – The Spice Isle

The beautiful island of Grenada in the Caribbean is one of the most popular islands to visit. It has the beautiful white sand beaches that visitors to the Caribbean want to enjoy, in addition to friendly people and good seafood. If you’re planning to visit Grenada – here are a list of activities and things to do on your stay.

Sandy Island

There aren’t just white sand beaches, there are even black sand ones! Grand Anse is probably the most well known beach, but there are plenty to visit that you might not have heard of before. For example, the pretty beach on Sandy Island (off the north coast) is a great spot for snorkelling and you will get a great view of Grenada from there. It is possible to arrange to visit the island for a day trip with a picnic.

Grenada Chocolate Company

Locally grown cocoa beans are used to create organic dark chocolate that you will definitely want to try on your visit to the island. You can also buy powdered chocolate too. The products are packaged with colourful tropical style labels and make perfect souvenirs of your visit to Grenada. It is possibe to tour the factory and learn about how the chocolate is made.

Rivers Antoine

Grenada’s oldest rum factory is still in operation. Located in the north east of the island, the distillery has distilled rum from sugar cane since 1785. Follow the rum making methods as they have been performed for centuries during your visit. Sample the rum – but be careful it could take your breath away – it’s 70% proof!

National Parks

Visit Grand Etang national park to experience the rainforests at 2000ft high. It is not recommended to go scuba diving the same day as you hike in the park – and could cause the bends! With 160 inches of rain per year, the hiking trails can get muddy, but the vegetation is diverse and should not be missed. Another national park is Levera Park which is protected for the turtle egg laying that takes place every year.

Snorkelling and Diving

There are plenty of areas to visit for both snorkeling and diving in Grenada. One of the most famous is the ‘Bianca C’ which has been referred to as the Titanic of the Caribbean. Nothing compares to her size and glory. If you really prefer to snorkel, then try Sandy Bay, Dragon Bay or even Molinere Reef.

Gouyave’s Fish Friday

The fisherman’s town of Gouyave holds a festive evening every Friday. Enjoy the music whilst you sample the variety of fish available from the street vendors. Try fish grilled, steamed or fried. The ideal situation to try local food as the locals eat it and to make some new friends.

Carib’s Leap

View where the last of Grenada’s indigenous peoples jumped to their deaths to escape the rule of the French. Located just outside Sauteurs, this spot overlooks the sea and rocks – where jumping would not be for the faint-hearted.
